Permission to Have Super Big Dreamy Goals
by Becca Powers.
After watching my dad perform on stage in front of people, something deep inside me stirred. I, too, saw myself on stage. But instead of epic guitar solos, I’d be talking — sharing my own written stories.
That dream unleashed a torrent of creativity. Poems, short stories, song lyrics, you name it. I’d jot them down in journals and perform them passionately to my stuffed animal fan club. Each time I delivered a talk to them, my confidence grew.
Yet as the years rolled by, my solo bedroom performances got swapped out for hanging out with friends and trying to fit in. Writing wasn’t considered cool. Speaking in public was considered dorky — and before I knew it, I had all but abandoned this thing I’d loved since I was a kid.
What I didn’t realize was that in those early days, my radiance flowed through me just like it did with my dad. I was a channel for the Universe’s creativity, and it was a thrilling, natural high. But somewhere along the way, I hit pause. My twenties were consumed by college, starting a family, and my career — and my love for writing and speaking got deprioritized.
Destined for More
That nagging feeling persisted though. The sense that I was destined for more, that my gifts and talents were itching to express themselves — and I bet you’ve felt that, too.
Your goals and dreams ignite your soul and allow you to express the truth of who you are. If you had to pick one, what goal or dream would you prioritize or, if necessary, invite back into your life?
After years of leading, teaching, and training working professionals, I’ve witnessed a familiar pattern. Adults stop dreaming. They settle for the ordinary, stifle their inner magic, and deep down, they’re restless and unsatisfied.
Super Big Dreamy Goals
Big goals can be terrifying and thrilling depending on your perspective — and they should be! Super big dreamy goals are intoxicating, and they invite us to pursue them. Simultaneously, they leave us questioning how to pursue them because of their size.
Goals and dreams are the very thing our radiance is here to express itself through. They give our life deeper meaning and a medium to embrace our gifts, talents, and strengths. Their lofty nature provides a sense of purpose and direction. The Apollo moon landing, the iPhone, and Disney World are just a few examples of radical, crazy, and once far-fetched ideas that changed the world and opened new possibilities for others.
Super big dreamy goals ignite our soul and connect us to Infinite Intelligence. There’s a sense that they are bigger than ourselves — and they are. That’s what makes them so necessary. They challenge us to reach beyond our current capabilities, fostering personal growth and transformation.
Super big dreamy goals cultivate character, like grit, resilience, and determination. The journey toward realizing them is rarely smooth sailing. It’s marked by setbacks, obstacles, and moments of doubt.
Yet it’s precisely these challenges that test our resolve and fortitude, ultimately strengthening our confidence that we can do whatever feels too big or too scary. We realize that each setback becomes an opportunity to learn, adapt, and persevere, bringing us one step closer to turning our dreams into reality.
Super big dreamy goals serve as catalysts for personal and professional progress. They ignite your imagination, spur innovation, and propel you toward a future limited only by the boundaries of your imagination. Embrace their grandness with warmth and confidence knowing that they hold the power to transform not only your life but the world around you.
Press Play on Your Goals
It’s time to press play on those super big dreamy goals by naming them and planning for how you can achieve them. To start, consider the different areas in your life and what super big dreamy goals you might set for them. There is no limit to the number of goals and dreams you can have. Your radiance loves to support all the things that light you up.
By setting super big dreamy goals that are aligned with your values and desires, you can pursue ambitious objectives with confidence and conviction, knowing that they resonate deeply with who you are and what you aspire to achieve. This alignment also allows Infinite Intelligence to come in and support you by opening doors and creating new opportunities that did not exist before.
Macro and Micro Goal Setting
As you press play on your super big dreamy goals, a useful tool to help you achieve them is macro and micro goal setting. Macro goal setting looks at the big picture, such as the date by which you’d like to achieve something.
Then, with micro goal setting, you define at least three small steps or goals you can do now to help you accomplish them. For example, say someone’s macro goal is to launch a podcast by the end of the year. Their three micro goals could be determining podcast theme and style, researching podcasting platforms, and finding a handful of podcasts with similar ideas to help clarify the concept.
Take a moment to focus on one of your super big dreamy goals. In a journal, use the prompts below to name your macro goal and define micro goals related to it. Repeat this process with as many goals as you like. Then, as you start to accomplish the micro goals, keep setting new ones as you continue on the road to achieving your dreams and shining brightly in your radiance.
What Matters Most
According to surveys, most working professionals (up to 98 percent) are suffering from or on the verge of burnout, and less than a fifth (as low as 17 percent) are actively setting goals. So I suspect that we’d see much less burnout if people gave themselves permission to pursue their career and their dreams outside of work, and if they set goals for each. This is why I recommend, to avoid getting stuck in our UN-potential, that we name and pursue super big dreamy goals for ourselves.
When I reflect on my parents, I see that once they both stopped doing the thing that made them happy, their radiance dimmed. Their passion and zest for life all but evaporated. They became disconnected from themselves, their souls, and everything.
This disconnection from their truth and passion ultimately led them to abandon who they were over who they settled to be. I learned a valuable lesson from my parents: It’s not accomplishing the super big dreamy goal itself that is important. Rather, the pursuit is what matters most.
The Power of AND
We are all working professionals and we are creative marvels longing to express ourselves — whether that’s through gardening, decorating, engineering, dancing, singing, playing sports, or something else. That is the Power of AND. Whatever our profession, we do that, and whatever our passion, we do that, too.
We don’t have to become a rock star or an Olympic gold medalist. The simple act of remaining committed to both our work and our creative selves is the secret to inviting in more purpose, passion, and prosperity.
Why would we ever hit pause on those dreams? I’ve found there are several common reasons why people put their dreams on pause. Take note if any seem familiar to you:
- Fear of failure
- Self-doubt
- Responsibilities
- Obligations
- Fear of judgment
In order to press play on your super big dreamy goals, all you have to do is give yourself permission. Invite your imagination and your creativity, and reexplore your super big dreamy goals through the lens of possibility.
Reigniting the Spark
Pursuing your super big dreamy goals doesn’t mean abandoning your job. It doesn’t mean aiming for the pinnacle of success in a certain field.
Super big dreamy goals are more about how we feel and expressing a skill or passion that lights us up. Thinking of it that way, what ignites the spark of your creativity?
Perhaps accessing the limitless and creative part inside feels as foreign as going to a new country. Perhaps it’s familiar but neglected, or you simply want to access more than you are right now.
Here are some ways to reignite that spark:
- Return to your roots: Think back to what set your heart on fire as a young kid. Whether it was music, writing, art, or some other flavor of creative magic, revisiting your roots can help you reconnect with your expansive, creative self.
- Experiment and take risks: Get gutsy! Creativity thrives when we’re willing to try new things and break the norm.
- Keep dreaming big: Don’t lose sight of those mammoth dreams of yours. Let ’em be your North Star, guiding you beyond limits. Imagine those super big dreamy goals often, and make sure they’re packed with meaning and purpose.
- Dance to old tunes: As silly as it sounds, dance to songs that made you move and groove as a kid. This helps to suspend critical thinking. It gives you a moment to connect back with the part of you that is free and unlimited in potential. My go-to is Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know.”
As you reconnect with the joyful and magical parts of your childhood when your imagination ran free, pay attention to what comes up. The things that brought you joy as a kid are often clues to the innate strengths, gifts, and talents that make you uniquely you. Your super big dreamy goals will take root and begin to blossom into reality when you reconnect with your uniqueness and give it permission to exist.
Finding what ignites your soul is a journey. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach for rekindling your spark. Big dreams don’t happen overnight, but they do happen one step at a time. To bring your super big dreamy goals to life requires doing more of what you love.
Your soul longs to tap into that creative, limitless, and passionate part of yourself. Unleashing your potential is not a linear process. Grant yourself permission to dream big, invite your passions to express themselves through you, and lean into the Power of AND to reignite that spark.
